Homemade gifts and personalized items are always on my preferred list and these Marbled Coffee Mugs check all the boxes. I am always on the hunt for the quick and fun DIY that is also easy on my pocketbook. This project comes almost entirely from the Dollar Tree with supplies totaling $ 11.00. This week my daughter, her bestie and I played with the marbling technique to create one of a kind coffee mugs.

Supplies

Before you get started you’ll need to gather the following supplies:

  • Coffee Mugs
  • Nail Polish (2-3 colors per mug)
  • Containers for dipping
  • Warm Water
  • Clear Gloss Sealer (find one here from Amazon or pick one up at your local Michaelsremember to use the coupon!)

Our local Dollar Tree did not have any plain white mugs so we chose to use these fun accent mugs!

First, fill each container with warm water. Next, dribble the fingernail polish around the water. After trial and error, we found that less polish worked the best during application. Once your design is ready dip your cup into the water, rolling it through the paint. Work to not double back in the paint. Although, if you do we found it easy to manipulate the paint directly after application. Once it dried it was not as easy.

Sealant

Once your paint is applied, let stand on a paper towel and allow to fully dry (at least a day). Once dried I used fingernail polish remover on a Q-tip to remove paint from unwanted areas, i.e. inside the rim, on the bottom or stray marks throughout. Next, I applied the Gloss Sealer to the painted area (only) using a foam brush. It is important to not apply the sealer where you will put your mouth. Also please note that these mugs are not dishwasher safe – please handwash for best results.

Have you ever tried this dipping technique? I’d love to hear your tips and tricks.

On the last day of our Honolulu adventure, we were invited to meet friends at the local Rainbow Drive-In located in Kapahulu. Not knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised by the delicious foods but also by the reasonable prices! The Rainbow menu covered all the local favorites and was jamming with customers.

Rainbow Drive-In

Rainbow Drive-In

Menu

The menu is based around the Hawaiian concept of “plate lunches”. A plate lunch consists of two scoops of white rice, macaroni salad and one entree and is quintessentially Hawaiian. Across the menu you will find many local favorites such as the Loco Moco, Boneless Chicken Mixed Plate and the Bacon, Spam and Egg Sandwich.

Rainbow Drive-In

History

The Rainbow Drive-In has been a cornerstone of the community for over 5o years. Proudly serving affordable, filling food to the common working man and Waikiki beach crowd.

Food

For my lunch, I chose the Loco Moco bowl (a smaller portion of the Loco Moco Plate). The Loco Moco is a local favorite that consists of a ground beef patty placed on a bed of white rice, smothered in brown gravy and topped with an egg cooked your way. This was honestly the most filling meal I had our entire trip. The complex flavor and texture combination made for the perfect lunch on the go!

Rainbow Drive-In

If ever in Honolulu, I highly recommend a stop by the Rainbow Drive-In. It is worth the Uber fair!

Nothing beats eating where the locals eat, such a great way to learn more about the culture.

Mindful Screen Time – A lesson in being present

So often in my daily life I feel conflicted about whether to document life toward my blog goals or just be present and experience life first hand. As I build my brand, I feel especially torn.

All of these thoughts have circled to a head as the hubster and I head to Hawaii for a dear friend’s wedding. To gram or not to gram, that is the question?

As I debate with myself on how much time is too much I found these simple tricks to make my screen time more intentional.

Limit Notifications

All too often I will download a new app and feel pressured into “Allowing Notifications” – I can’t be the only one, right?! Days, weeks and even months later I still have daily notification from apps I used once (hello Wayfair 🤷🏻).

It was amazing to actually see the amount of apps I had allowed notifications for. Before our trip I sat down with the list and really evaluated if notifications were necessary.  On those that I deemed necessary I then went one step further and carefully chose the kind of notification each app would require. Only those apps with the highest priority received access to my lock screen.

My hope is that by reducing the amount of lock screen notifications I will be able to leave my phone unattended for longer periods of time. I often feel addicted to the constant screen glow – it’s a rush!

Be Intentional

Decide before you unlock your device, why you are logging on. Make a mental note of your tasks and stick to it. Work to keep you mind focused and on task.

By being intentional with my time I have created a world where I can allow myself to be both engaged and unplugged. #balance

Budget Screen Time

Decide how much time you need to achieve your list of tasks, be realistic and then set a timer. I prefer to set my timer for 10 minutes prior to my desired budget. For me it’s all about the warning – and choosing how I spend those last few moments. Allowing me to prioritize my final work, I feel more accomplished come that final bell.

On occasion that budgeted time turns out to not be enough, knowing that it is okay is half of the battle. Evaluate what you were unable to do and work it in to another budgeted session later in the day.

I do find it valuable to not run over the time. You have to respect the time limit otherwise this practice will be ineffective. The more you work with time lines the better you will be with handling tasks in an efficient manner.

Moments are Fleeting, Don’t be Wasteful

There are many times I reach for my phone for distraction instead of productivity. Saturday mornings, for example, you can often find me “stuck” in Instagram Story loops for hooouurrrssss. It’s unhealthy and unproductive but I love it! My weekend guilty pleasure – my weekly check in with all the beautiful people that create my Instagram community. Although I believe you should allow yourself these indulgences, timing is everything.

This weekend I have promise myself to put down the phone and not get stuck. In addition, I promise to not scroll aimlessly, a vow to myself in search for new experience and opportunities. There are billions of humans on this planet. This weekend I will work to make connections, to breathe life into strangers and grow from the friends I make along the way.

Be Bored

Last but certainly not least I feel it is important to allow yourself to sit still, be in silence and perhaps even be bored. In today’s world we are constantly bombarded noise. When given the chance don’t be afraid to just be.

There is growth, peace and wonder in silence. Boredom often opens the tool box of creativity. Take these moments to breathe and enjoy the simple pleasures; a hot cup of coffee, the grip of a loved one’s hand or perhaps a smile from a passerby.

See what there is to find in that silence, allow your mind to play. You’ll be glad you did.

If you have ever been to Oregon, I am sure you’ve heard of Mo’s Seafood & Chowder. If you haven’t been to Oregon – be sure to add Mo’s Seafood & Chowder to the top of your list.

Mos Chowder

History

Mo’s started on the Newport Bayfront in the early 1940s and has been expanding ever since. Currently, there are nine Mo’s locations spread across the Oregon Coast. The restaurant was lovingly run by  Mohava “Mo” Marie Niemi a Newport local. Throughout the years Mo was a warm and inviting hostess to many tourists, famous people and locals alike. In 1992 Mo passed, leaving a lasting legacy and solid foundation to her family. The business is now run by second and third generation family members.

Restaurant

The Bayfront location is super charming and inviting – filled with local fishing and nautical memorabilia. The staff is kind and helpful – always eager to make a suggestion. Mo’s Seafood & Chowder truly is such a gem nestled in the rows of businesses you find along the Newport Bayfront.

Food

Mo’s menu is brimming with delicious fresh-from-the-bay favorites. From Slumgullion to Steamer Clams, Mo’s has you covered. Although the menu is filled with enticing options I just can’t seem to order anything other than the chowder. It is just sooooo good! 😋 With or without the bread bowl the clam chowder is a sure thing! In addition to your seafood favorites Mo’s offers salads, sandwiches and desserts. There is even a section on the menu for “Flatlanders” 😂.

Mos Chowder

Another wonderful part of Mo’s Seafood and Chowder is that you can purchase the Chowder Base here and it will ship to you anywhere in the US!!!

Have you ever tried Mo’s? Tell me about your experience in the comments below!

This weekend we are hosting my sister-in-law and her husband. I am so excited for the opportunity to spend time together! I don’t know about you but it seems like anytime we are vacationing or hosting the sudden neeeeed for dessert increases exponentially. 🤷🏻With our upcoming trip to Hawaii (less than 14 days 😳😬) it was important to me to find a sweet treat we could indulge in, that wouldn’t bust my whole diet. #winning

Below you will find a very generic recipe to make you very own Protein Balls! They are so easy and versatile! Whether you are serving dessert to family or shopping the #nsale these bites are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth and give you the energy needed to make it through!

Protein Balls

The best part about these Protein Balls is that you can fill them with almost anything! This week I decided to make two different flavors, the first a tropical fruit mixture, the second classic chocolate almond.

Protein Balls

In the Tropic Mix, I chopped up dried pineapple, cranberries and unsweetened coconut. For the classic, I used chopped almonds and mini chocolate chips! Both flavor profiles came out wonderful, such a wonderful sweet treat!Protein Balls

Taking this treat one step further, as to camouflage the dessert’s nutritional value 😉, I chose to add candy coating to the Protein Balls. This step is completely unnecessary, but effective!

Hope you enjoy this indulgence!

Carolyn

10 Steps To Simplify Your Home And Office

As I get older it becomes more apparent how many things we purchase with no specific need in mind. Although I can see it happening, for some reason, it seems impossible to stop! 🙈🙃 Today we are talking about ways to consciously simplify life at home and the office. Baby steps, if you will, towards living the minimalist lifestyle.

5 Steps to Simplify at Home

  1. Empty out and organize your handbag or wallet.
  2. Empty out and organize your Junk Drawer.
  3. Thoroughly review your book/cd/dvd collection and downsize.
  4. Minimize stacks of paper by switching to paperless billing and recycling old magazines.
  5. Clear off ALL the horizontal surfaces in the room, one room at a time.

How Do I Decide What to Keep?

Ask yourself these 5 questions:

When was the last time I used this?
(If jt’s been more than 9 months – donate).

What is the worst thing that could happen if I donate this item?

Can life go on without this item?

Could this item be MORE useful to someone else?

Does this item bring joy to my life?

5 Steps to Simplify at The Office

  1. Take the time to organize all the files and photographs into proper folders on your computer.
  2. Unsubscribe from email lists that no longer interest you (or entice you to purchase more 😈).
  3. Work to minimize the number of tabs you have open at any given time.
  4. Create a follow-up email folder to keep you organized and on top of your tasks.
  5. De-clutter your work desk.

These steps are only the beginning but at least we’re stepping in the right direction. 👣

How did you go Minimalist? Let me know below.
